How to match GSTR-2B with your purchase bills
GSTR-2B lists the purchases your suppliers reported. You may claim input tax credit only for bills that appear there, so match it with your own purchase bills every month.
Step by step
- Save your purchase bills. In the App, Purchases and expenses.
- Download GSTR-2B. On the GST portal: Services › Returns › Returns Dashboard, pick the period, GSTR-2B tile › Download (JSON or Excel).
- Open the file here. Press Open your GSTR-2B file or drop it on the box. Widen the bill dates if earlier bills may appear.
- Work through the lists. Start with Amount or date differs and In GSTR-2B, not in your purchase bills (press Add to my purchases if it is genuine), then remind the suppliers under Suppliers with nothing in this GSTR-2B.
- Claim the right ITC. The ITC matched tile is the safe credit for table 4 of GSTR-3B.
- Keep a copy. Download any list as CSV, or print the match as a PDF.
Worked example
October purchase bills: 22 bills, ITC ₹48,600. GSTR-2B: 20 match (₹44,100), one bill differs (₹1,800 in your books, ₹1,620 in 2B: a typing mistake by you), one supplier has not filed (₹2,880). Claim ₹44,100 + ₹1,620 after fixing your bill; claim the other ₹2,880 in the month it appears.
Rules and dates
Section 16(2)(aa) of the CGST Act: ITC only when the bill is in GSTR-2B. GSTR-2B is generated on the 14th of the next month.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Matching the wrong month. Bills of earlier months often appear in a later 2B; widen the dates.
